Champions of Anteria Download project may have been canceled, but Ubisoft has not completely abandoned its initial idea and has even used it as a basis for a brand new title: Champions of Anteria. This is precisely the latter that is discussed today, since after only a few months of development, it is already ready for launch. As Kingdom of Anteria in his time, Champions of Anteria is part of these games trying to mix several genres. In this case, three distinct phases follow one another: a first typical strategy / wargame during which we plan military action and construction in the provinces, a second to the air of city builder where we must improve its capital to maximize the production, which will allow the passage to make some potions and objects that will finally find their interest in hack’n slash phases. All these sequences with distinct gameplay overlap coherently enough to form a turn-based adventure that will see the player fight against an evil mage and his henchmen.
Everything in Champions of Anteria therefore starts from the campaign map that allows you to plan actions and launch all missions. We start at the beginning of the game by attacking the few free areas that are conquered by a simple little hack’n slash mission. They generate a constant income in gold coins or points of fame, the 2 main resources of the game. Some construction options are also available to improve yields by building trading counters multiplying by 2, 3 or 4 according to the level of investment, the income of a province, by means of also some pieces of maintenance every turn. Fortifications are then added to this to improve the defenses, very useful before embarking quietly to attack other factions: the dune tribe, beards and the broken crown. Indeed, once at war, your regions can also be attacked and will have to be defended with new hack’n slash missions. But beware, there is only one action per turn, which means that if you go on the offensive while an attack is underway, you will let your citizens defend themselves and risk losing a province. . Decision making is not complicated in this very simplistic phase. If you are attacked, you defend yourself and then attack the next turn. It’s not more complicated than that. The only choice the player really has is to define who will be the next opponent and then conquer all his regions to his capital. Admittedly, it breaks a little linearity, but it is not enough to make this phase really interesting.
The second part of the game lies in the management of the capital. Far from being a province like the others, it contains a village that must be developed to produce the five basic resources: fire, metal, nature, lightning and water. There may also be houses and workmen’s cabins necessary for the manufacture of all other buildings. Finally, the forge, the apothecary hut and the magisterium workshop allow you to craft armor, weapons, potions and objects for the heroes using both elementary resources and gold coins. But to benefit from all this, you must first spend your points of fame in a rather crude technology tree, which bonus unlock new buildable neighborhoods in the village. This is an important point since each building has a bonus or production penalty depending on the type of land on which it is placed and other buildings in the area. For example, a miner’s hut will produce more metal in a mountain, but will see its production drop if a quarry is placed in the same area. So this is a kind of puzzle that is proposed to us there, but certainly not a real city builder. The construction zones are predefined, there is no need to take into account the needs of the inhabitants, there are no taxes, no costs, no budgets, the buildings do not deteriorate, etc. In itself, this part of the game can be interesting, but it is still a shame not to have deepened things a little more. We can also regret that this is limited to the capital alone.
Finally come the sequences of hack’n slash which constitute the entirety of the missions in the field. Whether you want to conquer or defend, the principle remains the same: you choose 3 heroes among the 5 available and you fulfill objectives that can be to eliminate waves of enemies during the construction of a tower, to escort a convoy, protect peasants, etc. The link with the real purpose of the mission is not always easy to see, but the main problem comes mainly from the repetitiveness of objectives and maps. Personally, after 3 rounds of play only, so 3 missions, I had to repeat identically a battle already won while I attacked a different region. So we get tired of these sequences, which are mandatory and eventually become a chore. Only fights against enemy capitals are a little more interesting as they are scripted. It may be to live a seat there or to face powerful bosses, which has the merit of breaking a little weariness that settles quickly. On the other hand, this does not compensate for the poverty of the evolution system of the difficulty and the heroes which is only related to the number of points of renown spent. In other words, if your village reaches level 5, your heroes will be level 5 and you will be able to safely attack lower level regions. There is no XP to win here, or even loot to recover, your heroes evolve alone, and your only task is to choose their powers among the 2 that are proposed every 2 levels.
Yet these phases are not so uninteresting as that on paper. The goal is mainly to exploit the elements associated with each hero to win. Each one has indeed a strength and weakness, like a shifumi. The metal beats the nature that beats the lightning that beats the water, which beats the fire that beats the metal. By attacking the good enemy with the right character, you make sure the critical damage and whatever the weapon used, the relief, etc. There is no notion of close combat here or remote combat: the one with the right element wins, even if he fights with a bow against a sword. Each hero can also count on cooldown spells that can sometimes counter weaknesses, sometimes to maximize the damage. Indeed, certain sequences can be devastating, with for example an archer who can place charges on the enemies then activate them with a second power whose power depends obviously on the number of charges placed.
The use of these spells is even more interesting because most have an area of effect, which involves anticipating enemy movements during planning in active break. One can also add to his arsenal of potions allowing as well to heal as to change the elementary orientation of a hero, as well as traps made in the magisterium to give a strategic dimension finally rather interesting, despite the side again enough simplistic basic mechanisms. This is something quite representative of the game as a whole: Champions of Anteria is based on good ideas, on various sequences and that complement each other well, but does not exploit them enough and ends up leaving a rather bitter after taste.
The concept of Champions of Anteria turns out to be rather good, with different phases that follow one another in a coherent way and complement each other well to give rise to a few hours of friendly play. Nevertheless, one quickly deplores a great repetitiveness as well at the level of the simplistic mechanics as of the objectives of mission. The result is a certain weariness that ruins the picture in the long run. Pity.
