As for The Sims 2, Maxis and Electronic Arts offer us an add-on for the The Sims 3 University Life Download to relive our beautiful years of student, integrating a campus. So, déjà vu, or extension of quality? The publisher continues indeed on its lucrative launched by still watering us multiple extensions giving a little color to the sometimes dull world of our good old Sims. We have recently had the successful introduction of the seasons, and it is now the university that enters the life of our avatars … or rather our avatars who enter the university. And this time Maxis has made sure that this new aspect is well integrated with our basic worlds (or the worlds added by the extensions). In fact, University does not add an additional city, since it is rather in the form of a small world apart, where we follow our Sims for a week, before they come back in their original city that has not changed in the meantime. As in Academy for Sims 2, this system has a major flaw: it rather presents the add-on as a somewhat negligible option, and not as an element in itself.
Each Sim (from the young adult), can spend at least a quarter at the university to perfect his knowledge. Concretely, this is the case: the campus mascot goes to your home to offer you a welcome kit at the university, which contains, among other things, an aptitude test, to see if you will be able to obtain a scholarship or free credits. This result is calculated according to the skills, work experience and character traits of the Sim in question. In other words, you may want to make sure that you are not too ignorant before filling out the questionnaire … Then you just have to go to a computer or a smartphone (another novelty of the extension) to proceed at registration. At this stage, it is possible to choose which Sim of the home to send to the university, then to select the diploma for which it will work (trade, visual arts, communication, sciences and medicines, technology, physical education), by setting the number credits to acquire. Basically, to get a degree, a specific number of credits is needed.
The more credits you can earn for one term, the more courses the Sim will have for one week (and the higher the price of college registration). In return, he will spend less time on school benches. A quarter of course is done during a week Sim, your character arriving Sunday on campus and leaving the following Sunday. It is also possible to complete two consecutive semesters. Following this registration, the Sim packs his bags and leaves in a moving truck that takes us directly to the campus. Farewell, real world, and in a week or two!
Yes, it’s all well and good, but what’s the use of getting a degree? Well, getting a good score on your final results (exams take place every Friday) will make it easier to enter the workforce. Indeed, according to the score obtained, the Sim can start his career at a higher level (level 4 for the A note). A diploma also makes it possible to obtain a higher salary, to obtain professional bonuses on a more regular basis and to reap faster professional experience. Like what, in Sims, studies have a definable interest! (And besides, we can even cheat during exams!) But back to our sheep: once on campus, you must find housing in this small town, which offers to pay rent to live in a house, or to integrate a residence or a student association, which are free.
Student life can now begin! A schedule is provided for you, which can be consulted in the “University” tab, which replaces the Career tab. You will find your class hours, the responsibilities to take to have a good grade on the exam and a progress meter, to see if you do not do anything. Because the path of the student is filled with well-known traps, and it will be necessary to know how to dose the time spent to study … or to party. Indeed, the opportunities are not lacking, and the developers have integrated a brand new element in the interest of inter-Sims relations: social groups. Our character can now flirt with three social groups, the geeks, the popular and the rebels, and try to belong to one or more of them. To do this, it will be enough to practice some activities giving influence in these groups, like to win bowling to please the popular Sims. Belonging to one of these groups can be very useful, since at a high level of belonging, you can even get an extra trait and a new job opportunity. Alas, this system certainly does not revolutionize relationships in the game, and rather looks like a small additional collection, fun, but not exciting, despite the opportunities offered at the end.
School level, attention, contrary to what one might think, it is not possible to attend all classes of your Sim. During some of them, it will be necessary to wait while passing the time. Only the lectures allow you to interact with the teacher by asking questions. We would have appreciated that these interactions are a little more advanced, and it is the same for all that relates to learning, which remains very traditional. For example, we could create a study group or work through an object related to our diploma, which appears in our inventory during our registration. For the diploma related to the arts, one thus draws a sketchbook very practical. In this regard, it will also be possible to acquire the skill “street art” to tag everything goes, which is quite fun. Celebrations and parties, some novelties are also emerging, such as the ability to do the pear on a juice-pong, obviously with orange juice, and certainly not an alcoholic substance. The extension also comes with its small batch of novelties such as new clothes (not very folichons) and new hairstyles, furniture a little crazy student fashion, three personality traits unpublished, three skills and some additional interactions. Nevertheless, an impression of weariness is likely to invade the player fairly quickly.
This extension is especially convincing thanks to the interaction it brings between the level of studies of our Sims and their success on the job market. Campus life is enjoyable and there are plenty of activities to do, from somewhat moronic challenges to collections, studies and decrepit holidays. That said, we’ll tire a little too quickly and we would also have appreciated that the campus does not look so much like a subsidiary activity finally quite optional and quickly forgotten.
