Creating fear is a delicate art, based on a balance that is sometimes difficult to find. Outlast, or more recently Resident Evil 7 have been able to offer first-person experiences for the less successful, raising fear even among the hardest. Husk Download tries to follow the lead of the two giants but has obviously faced a challenge he was not able to meet.
It all starts with the train accident that takes you, your girlfriend and your daughter to the bedside of your dying father. Ejected from your wagon, you are alone at the edge of the town of Silvercliff, without news of your family. Your quest will be to go to the local hospital to make sure your little world is doing well. Of course, your adventure will not be a journey of health and it will lead you to cross the different environments of the city, all deserts or almost, taking care to solve micro puzzles and not to make you bite by the different monsters that populate Husk.
Unfortunately, if the first 10 minutes of play suggest an anxiety-provoking atmosphere, Husk runs out of steam very quickly and even worse, allows himself the luxury of making you find the long time on the four little hours that you will be asked to play for to be traveled. The reasons are multiple. First of all, the movements of your character are a heavy handicap and endurance is particularly limited. So do not expect to be able to sprint permanently, too long a race overshadowing your avatar, blurring his view and reducing his movements at a speed close to the spot. It would not have been an evil in itself if Husk had proposed a variety of situations and it was not essentially about walking a long way from point A to point B. Effectively, the construction of the game is modeled end to end on the same model.
To progress from one environment to another, we were confronted only 3 or 4 different situations: find a badge or a key to open a door, find a code to unlock another, activate a valve .. as many small interactions that will not appeal to your gray matter or your address and which only add a little artificial life to the game. Worse still, some puzzles are sometimes subject to the player without any consistency with the game. intrigue in general and are just an excuse to explore every corner of the closed environment of the title, which is mostly a row of alley or corridors making the advance very linear.
Between two enigma sessions, you will meet strange white creatures who will detect you and attack you very quickly. If the game suggests you crouch behind some of them, know that the infiltration works only in a very random way, the monsters detecting you whenever they want. So you have two options left: flight or confrontation. If the first solution will sometimes be compulsory, the fighting is particularly painful. Heavy pachydermic, your character has few skills in melee and carries particularly imprecise shots. Winning a fight will only be possible if you make the first move or have enough ammo, otherwise some of your opponents will kill you without you even knowing why.
Despite all these defects, Husk could have shone by the quality of its environments, its atmosphere or its narration. This is not really the case. In terms of history, know that the game will be told in a suggested way, whether through the thoughts of your character (who seems indifferent to everything that happens around him) or through documents you can read the text. If we greet the topic of heavy and serious, it is regrettable that Husk does not dig more about his subject and he struggles to stick the nightmarish events of its course with his remarks. To make a horror game is one thing, to justify it with a solid story is another. In addition, the different thoughts of our character lack of conviction, for lack of a dub just average.
Side atmosphere, Husk played the card of the known and marked field and recites all the elements that one is entitled to expect from a survival: abandoned hospital, cemetery, cellar, police station, hotêl, all dotted with what you need of flimsy porcelain dolls etc. In short nothing really frankly original, although we must recognize that the whole thing does the job. Note also that Husk is served by a very nice soundtrack which is certainly discreet, but which fits rather well with the darkness of the game. It is therefore all the more regrettable that all the defects mentioned above break the whole story. biting at some sequences that could have created a little thrill. But the heaviness of the movements, the redundancy of the objectives, the wobbly storytelling or the monsters finally more annoying than terrifying make Husk a little breathless experience and finally more painful than horrifying.
