Released a year and a half ago, the excellent Mount & Blade Warband Download has federated a large community of fans, fallen in love with the medieval sandbox of TaleWorlds Entertainment. The mere evocation of the title of the game refers to the profession of faith of these small studios without big means, which cover their projects with a mixture of rigor and passion specific to the independent scene. Mount & Blade is back today threatening your nights sleep with a stand-alone extension, Warband, intended to extend the original experience. On the program: an improved visual rendering, an expanded solo campaign and the appearance of a multiplayer mode to rub against other belligerents.
While we daringly compared it to Sid Meier’s Pirates !, Elite and Defender of the Crown on the occasion of his test, we were far from predicting that Mount & Blade’s growing fame an excellent word of mouth would one day match that of his illustrious predecessors. The title of TaleWorlds is certainly not devoid of defects, but it has the advantage of being able to rely for a long time on a major asset: the modding. The visual aspect is a little behind for the player demanding that you are? A mod like Graphical Enhancement can fix it. Battles do not put enough protagonists to your liking? The Battle Size Changer is likely to correct this. Do you feel like you’re going around in circles after a while? Here again, there is a plethora of often damn well-defeated variants that transpose for some action in very different universes. The downside is that we could say that Warband, the first official extension of Mount & Blade, just integrate in its own way most of the improvements designed by the community. But it would be severe, because this extension goes far beyond: many small details allow him to transcend the original game on all points, not to mention the arrival of a damn fun multiplayer option.
We will begin by briefly recalling the principle of Mount & Blade, knowing that we will limit ourselves for the most part in this article to deal with the novelties brought by Warband, and that we therefore invite neophyte readers to refer in priority to the test of the game. basic, where they will find more details about its rich and solid gameplay. Mount & Blade is a sandbox game set in a realistic medieval universe. It allows you to embody an ambitious leader, whom you create and evolve in the manner of a role-playing character. You can recruit fighters, hunt for brigands, take part in tournaments, pledge allegiance to a kingdom, loot enemy villages, assault fortresses, and so on. The game adopts movements in real time on a tactical map, to better immerse you as soon as the opportunity comes in impressive battles of realism where you then enjoy a view to the 3rd person. You can fight on foot or load on mount, handle different types of weapons, place orders to your groups of units … One of the peculiarities of Mount & Blade, it is that it does not integrates no scenario or main quest, and does not assign you any objective at the beginning of the game: it’s up to you to set your own goal. This is also what may have embarrassed a number of players, put off by the difficulty to “get into”. This abrupt aspect has unfortunately not improved in Warband, which offers a new tutorial probably more enjoyable to browse, but just as limited insofar as it addresses once again that the ba-ba fight and the climb.
Despite a slight scripting at the beginning of the game (following the choice of your region of origin), the first contact will once again sort between players motivated by the discovery of the game’s features and those who will stop at visual rendering somewhat outdated. The graphics were still significantly retouched on a technical level. For starters, the title now supports HDR, which allows you to fine-tune contours and increase contrasts. The character models have been substantially reworked. They are less angular and enjoy a much more convincing animation; the movements are better decomposed and less rigid. It is also appreciated that these technical improvements serve the gameplay: the riders adopt more realistic postures during mounted fights and enjoy greater flexibility since they can now redirect an already charged shot.
As a result, you have the impression of independently steering your fighter and his mount (who now has his own life meter), which was not really the case in the basic game. In general, the handling of weapons has been reviewed, as the management of the shield (which can now protect you even being stuck in your back). New weapons are emerging, some of which, hybrid, can be used remotely or in close combat. You also gain the ability to pick up projectiles fallen to the ground, or to kick to destabilize an opponent in hand-to-hand! All these pleasant additions that provide an increased pleasure during the phases of battles, which can involve (natively) up to 150 protagonists.
The strategic side of Mount & Blade: Warband also benefits from a lot of improvements and additional features. The solo campaign first integrates a sixth faction: the Sarranid Sultanate, whose soldiers evoke the medieval Moors. Their Mamluk horsemen are weakly protected but fast and powerful (their falchions have a good length). To welcome this new faction and the desert area from which it originates, the map of the world has been enlarged, recast and embellished in passing. There are more or less the same villages, towns and castles as in the original game, but the topography has been completely changed. Another novelty: by tracking robbers on the tactical map or by accepting a dedicated quest, it is possible to find wicked haunts, to clean with a small selection of your army as the action takes place in a wooded parade. By the way, you now have to watch the morale of your troops if you do not want them to flee the battlefield at the lowest fallen soldier. Beyond the new quests, the possible interactions are more numerous and more varied. Your heroes sometimes have a story to tell, in relation to certain rallies; they also quarrel much more often. Political relations between lords are more complex; their power struggles provide you with new dialogues and tactical options. It is now possible for you to seduce a lady and get married, knowing that her promise may provoke you into a duel. But the most notable contribution is undoubtedly the possibility of becoming oneself king, an option previously offered in the form of mods and whose absence was regretted during the test of the basic game. This will require proof of your ability to reign. You can then recruit lords to make your vassals, give them land, etc.
The gameplay of Mount & Blade: Warband is full of subtleties to discover little by little. This extension also adds an option to set up skirmishes yourself. But the big news is the appearance of a multiplayer mode that allows you to compete against other players online through parts of several types. The classic modes Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture of Flag and Conquest are, it is true, of little interest, but it is quite different of the modes Siege and Battle. The Headquarters-type parties are an opportunity to measure Warband’s novelties in taking hold (multiple breaches, destructible doors …), but also to measure the importance of an organization worthy of the name. to take advantage, whether you are assailant or defender. As for the Battle mode, which opposes two opposing armies on maps particularly well studied, without respawn possible before the end of the round, it represents a little the Holy Grail if you play on a server hosting 100 belligerents (or more) with friendly fire complete. The clashes then take an epic and spectacular turn, often more chaotic than tactical, which does not prevent the players from watching over the fate of their character in the tumult of the battle. Finally, note that each game mode allows you to upgrade the equipment of your fighter as and when your achievements, without this imbalance for all parties. The multiplayer is therefore as fun as complete, although some will regret that it comes down to an ephemeral action and disconnected from any campaign, to which it remains impossible to take part in many.
