Aloft takes players to a world of drifting islands, where each island can be transformed into an airship with the right equipment, such as rudders and sails. The goal of the gameplay is to explore, build and develop against a backdrop of beautiful but also challenging sky landscapes.

Before starting the actual gameplay, we will come to create our hero. What we get here is a not overly extensive character creator, allowing us to create a more or less twisted-looking protagonist, in whose skin we will set off to conquer the world of Aloft.

So, once we are satisfied with the appearance of our protagonist, we approve and wake up on one of the islands, and then proceed to the well-known and well-loved collection of basic materials. During the journey, participants have the opportunity to discover the secrets of this unique world.

Mechanics and technology development

The game’s key mechanics are to develop technology and automate production using a system of windmills and rope nets. As the game progresses, players can also raise animals and grow crops, which supports their development and allows them to acquire unique resources.

A world of flying islands

What undoubtedly distinguishes Aloft from other productions in the sandbox survivalist genre is undoubtedly the world we will have to traverse here. The entire production map is placed high in the skies on flying islands.

As the game world consists of islands scattered in the air, the real fun begins only when we produce our first hang glider. It allows us to move between islands, which, as it turns out, have their own small but quite diverse ecosystems.

Moving and flying

Flying is of no consequence or challenge, you don’t feel the impact of gravity or any other physical forces. Wherever you take off from, you can be sure that sooner or later you will arrive anywhere.

While we are talking about sky voyages, we should mention a rather interesting solution, which is one of the biggest features the developers boast. Each of the islands we visit can be transformed by us into our personal, mobile, sky base.

Wind mechanics in the game

Since we have sails then, as you might expect, some wind mechanics are implemented in the game. Harnessing this element will help us not only to move around the game world.

It allows us to power the devices we build, connecting the windmills that convert wind into energy to the machines via wires. This is an interesting variety, available to the player, of options related to building.

Summary

Aloft we already get quite a lot of content, several biomes, a lot of things we can build and a lot of options related to growing crops, raising animals or manufacturing. If you are attracted to unfettered exploration of sky islands and expansion of your own base, you can have a lot of fun here.

The combat needs improvement, the physics is seemingly there, but it’s as if there is none, and something as basic as gathering offers only boredom. One can only hope that the developers will take care to improve these aspects, because the title has enough distinctive elements that one would like to see it in a more polished form.
