The Casting of Frank Stone is another horror film from Supermassive Games, a studio specializing in the production of so-called interactive films. The latest work of the Brits is already the tenth approach to the genre released in just nine years.
The Casting of Frank Stone Review
After the quite successful The Devil in Me, the creators took a breather from The Dark Pictures anthology and decided to tell a story from the world of Dead by Daylight. However, while the original DbD is a network game, where four players try to escape from the fifth, playing the role of a murderer.
In The Casting of Frank Stone we are dealing with the classic formula developed by Supermassive Games. So it is a single-player game, although there is also a mode of passing the controller to another person, in which we control alternately several characters.
We direct the fates of five people
This time we direct the fate of five people. Unless you count the older versions of them separately, because the action of the game takes place partly in the 1960s, in 1980 and in the present day, and still introduces issues of time travel and alternate realities.
What unites all the plots and the fates of the characters are the horrific events that took place in an Oregon steel mill in 1963. It was there that the serial killer of the title Frank Stone died at the hands of police officer Tom Holt.
A script like a movie
All the timelines have been cleverly interconnected, and the developers have woven a lot of various choices into the scenario, changing the course of the plot, although at the same time our decisions are sometimes limited.
From time to time we come across turning points in the story, which we are not really able to change. This is by no means anything that spoils the fun, as there are plenty of choices anyway, but it’s a bit of a shame that, despite everything, some events are beyond our influence.
Gameplay
Gameplay in The Casting of Frank Stone is typical of Supermassive Games studio’s games. So here we have a mass of intermittent scenes, and in between them sections in which we are engaged in exploring smaller or larger locations, collecting clues and useful items.
The story overall is conducted well, although I would have wished for more complex puzzles. There’s too much searching for parts for broken power generators, as well as looking around for keys, which are usually a few steps away.
The climate of the game
There was much more potential here, for the atmosphere is downright exquisite. All the events are fantastically presented, every intermittent scene is great to watch, and every location is dripping with character. The locations are seemingly not large or elaborate, but truly exquisite.
A certain amount of replayability is provided by the finder system in The Casting of Frank Stone and the so-called montage. Finds come in several forms. They come in the form of trinkets, creepy dolls and various documents, supplementing the story.
Summary
Technically, The Casting of Frank Stone looks very good, which should come as no surprise when you consider that it runs on Unreal Engine 5. The facial expressions are natural, the textures are sharp, the world is well-shaded and evocative, but at the same time there is nothing overly thrilling here.
Supermassive Games once again shows that it knows its game genre superbly. The Casting of Frank Stone Download PC very good self-player. You can count on several hours of engaging play and an interesting plot thread, which is a kind of prologue, an introduction to the events that occur in Dead by Daylight.
