Age of Mythology Retold is a remaster of a production that rather mature gamers remember. And although it is just an old production dressed in new clothes, with a whole lot of archaic solutions, it is still fully playable.

The game offers three gameplay modes: story, single-player skirmish and multiplayer. In story mode, we have the opportunity to participate in three campaigns. The first, and also the longest, follows the fate of legendary heroes, who together try to stop a group of villains planning to unleash powers capable of destroying the world.
The second tells the story of two dwarven brothers and their attempt to forge a gift for a god. The third, on the other hand, lets you relive the events of The Titans add-on, set after the end of the first campaign. Each of these stories is interesting and engaging, conducted in a way that can absorb you for hours.
Four nations
There are four nations at the player’s disposal – Greeks, Egyptians, Nordics and Atlanteans. I myself played the Greeks for the longest time, and in a few hours of gameplay I also checked out the Egyptians. The Greeks are the base nation, whose mechanics seem neutral to other strategy games.
The game manages four resources-food, wood, gold and favor of the gods. The last of these is obtained differently in each nation. And it is an important resource, as it allows you to recruit mythological units, which significantly affect the situation on the battlefield.
Outline of gameplay
A brief outline of the gameplay is behind us, so let’s talk about impressions of the game itself. And these are positive. There are several campaign scenarios at the players’ disposal, which are quite extensive and varied.
In addition to the usual missions involving domination of the enemy, we will encounter scenarios devoted to skirmishes themselves, short episodes of sneaking behind enemy walls, or a kind of chase for a lost artifact.
Gameplay is an evolution
The developers working on the Retold version must have followed a similar rule, because the refreshed version of Age of Mythology Retold, does not try to make any revolution. One such change is that we can use Age spells multiple times, rather than just once, as in the original.
While this change may have escaped our attention, on the battlefield it makes clashes more dynamic, and can change the fate of the battle, favor points also generate faster.
Unit models
Visually, the unit models are gorgeous, and even at the highest close-ups the developers have nothing to be ashamed of. Buildings are characteristic of a particular faction. We can easily recognize which faction a particular player is playing.
Elements of the environment, such as ruins, forests, mountains and the sea, are also neatly made and cannot be faulted. Character models, buildings, as well as the maps themselves have gotten much more detailed, and also use new image generation technologies.
