It must be recognized that capturing and transcribing the essence of H. P. Lovecraft’s writings is not an easy task, as the author’s work relies heavily on the unspeakable to arouse fear in the reader. It is this year Zoetrope Interactive which has bowed to the delicate exercise and which succeeds it quite well with Conarium Download.
If you have not yet had the pleasure of devouring the Hallucinated Mountains, know that in essence, his story tells of the woes of a scientific expedition to Antarctica during which researchers will discover many indescribable horrors, pushing them to never again try to return there for fear of awakening ancestral monstrosities that should remain asleep.
Taking place after the news of Lovecraft, Conarium offers you to put on the boots of Frank Gilman, scientist of his state, who awakes without great memories of his past in the heart of Upuaut base, deserted of all life. Your goal will be to explore the place and its basements to understand as much your past as the nature of the oddities that occur there. The strong point of Conarium lies in the quality of its narration. During your exploration, you will have the opportunity to glean a lot of documents, immediately recorded in your journal and which relate all the past facts of the scientific expedition. In addition, the story is also sometimes narrated in the form of flashback rather well staged, as well as by the oral interventions of your protagonist.
It is difficult to reproduce the pen so characteristic of Lovecraft and yet Conarium’s writers have succeeded, using many figures of style and superlatives that would not have denoted in the original work. It will be many lines of text that you will read, and you will browse with a certain greed, if you are sensitive to the spirit of one of the fathers of terror. The various documents collected, written for the most part in the first person, clearly reinforce the sense of immersion and imminent but invisible danger which characterizes, once again, the various works written by the author. We could just blame the dubbing comedian of the main character for typing often next door, adopting a rather strange tone and more likely to smile than to arouse terror.
Side atmosphere, Conarium is not left behind and offers environments quite neat and varied, which stick rather well to some descriptions left by Lovecraft throughout his bibliographer. Whether it’s the base itself or its sub-pitches, the mysterious and disturbing atmosphere does not leave the player, and this is also the interest of Conarium: it does not rely on the jump scares, or even on hackneyed codes of horror, but rather on the feeling of oppression and latent fear. These sensations are reinforced by a quality atmospheric soundtrack, which further encapsles Conarium with a mystical and disturbing aura.
If we delay a little to evoke the gameplay, it is simply because it comes down to its simplest expression. Conarium is actually more to be classified as a “market simulator” than an investigative game. Indeed, most of your actions will be to collect cranks to operate this or that mechanism. The rare riddles that could have asked for a little start of gray matter are unfortunately much too guided by the documents collected or even by the interventions of the protagonist, always prompt to blow you the way forward. The interactions are ultimately few and not frankly entertaining, and we would have liked that the title digs a bit more its puzzle aspect.
There is also a certain heaviness in the movements of the character, who alternates running and walking in a sometimes erratic way, and the inventory on his side is not especially intuitive. Moreover, the title lacks finely finished: it is for example impossible to set your keys on PC, and navigation in the menus is not frankly fluid nor intuitive. There is also a slight caveat about the materialization of the nightmarish creatures of Lovecraft mythology: their design is a little too “boat” to match the kinds of shapeless masses only partially described in the works of the author. If we understand the need to pour into the demonstrative to give a little more rhythm to the story, we would have preferred that the studio be careful to be explicit, especially since the adventure is short: about 4 hours to see the end of the tunnel.
