It was late February that Milestone had invited the press to London to present MXGP 3: The Official Motocross Videogame, and a mysterious new racing game. Named Gravel download, the soft promises to revive the endless pleasures of the arcade racing game, as it was known in the late 90s. On paper, we would be quite takers. Joystick in hands, things are a little different …
The arcade racing games are dead, peace to their soul. And we mean by that: the real arcade racing games. Not these titles buttocks squeezed between two chairs, torn between the desire to please the greatest number, while proposing some more realistic elements. Today, apart from Need for Speed and Forza Horizon, few of them take the risk of offering a light but fun gameplay, relying on the pleasure of speed. That’s why Milestone’s announcement had something to cheer about: with Gravel, it’s precisely this kind of sensations that Italians seek to invoke. Note the use of the verb to search.
Gravel announces the color from the first seconds: it is a race game arcade pure juice. The races are all off-road, either on vast white sand beaches, or on the rainforest trails. The app clearly aims at the diversity of roads and landscapes, and makes travel the player of the islands of the South Pacific to the ice cream of Alaska. With these rather numerous environments and ambiances very marked, Gravel easily recalls the racing games of the late 90s, but also evokes newer titles. If Milestone prefers to quote one of the first games of the studio, that is to say Screamer, Gravel is clearly inspired by titles such as MotorStorm or Forza Horizon 3. We find this desire to travel, to propose landscapes of postcards, and especially to propose an accessible racing game, but based on a coherent physics.
The game offers different types of races, a significant variety in our time. If The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the new milestone for RPGs, Forza Horizon 3 is the game of arcade racing games, and after such success, hard to be confined to racing beasts circuit. We thus find races in semi-open environments, whose progression is marked out; cross country cross country stadium races; and the Speed Cross and Wild Rush modes. You will understand, in any case it is to go very fast and every time off-road. The game offers a whole bunch of cars: Ford Raptor F150, Hummer H3, BMW X3 CC, Ford Fiesta ST, Renault 5 Turbo Maxi, Lancia Stratos … The garage taps into different eras but we find, for the essential, SUVs or cars known for their exploits in WRC, as well as some good surprises.
Quick question: what makes a racing game fun? Well, it’s very simple. The player must manage his speed and anticipate changes of direction; modulations (speeds, turns …) that have a direct impact on the behavior of the car, which must be tamed. A racing game, ultimately, is running on a beam: each new step is a progression towards victory, but also a potential future accident. The risk & reward (“risk and reward”) in the pure state, therefore. And it is precisely this feeling of constant danger, combined with a good sense of speed, that makes a racing game fun.
And yet, it is precisely on this point that Gravel fails. If we could test only one circuit, it was made of a road finally winding and extremely wide. Risk areas were virtually non-existent and we triumphed over AI without much difficulty. In fact, during our first test, we were even more than a minute ahead of the second … It was hoped that this design concern came from the circuit proposed in the demo, but the developer of the game confirmed us that the lines were all cut in this way. Depending on the destination, the narrowness of the road may vary, but obviously, developers prefer to focus on off-road driving, with jumps and drifts. Obviously, it will be enough to just walk to the floor, and play the handbrake from time to time.
It’s a shame because the driving is not unpleasant. The driving is very arcade and reminds the ancient V-Rally, with a sacred impression of speed. But with such nice lines, hard to really have fun. We even have time to look at the landscape! And as much to tell you that it is not really a success. Milestone games have never been known for their graphics, Gravel should not change the game. The color scheme is pretty nice, but the textures lack precision, and lack of detail. This is particularly striking on the various racing cars, which in the current state of things, are very “plastic”. After half an hour of play, our ardor was already well chilled …
