Gameplay
The gameplay focuses on heat management, resource management and the classic or modern Mech control model. Thanks to Unreal Engine 5, the game environment is both detailed and can be dynamically destroyed.
In addition, there is a five-player cooperative mode, where players can go through the campaign together. Since the storytelling here is more focused, there are many cinematic interludes, dialogues and mission events, and more to connect you with the cast and the larger war.
Attractive story
The campaign is otherwise fairly straightforward – once the school is over and the invasion begins, you are assigned missions on various planets. Although the objectives often boil down to neutralizing enemies, they are varied.

BattleMech Type
The type of BattleMech determines the tonnage, which affects what you can equip. So it’s worth equipping the largest guns and lasers available, especially if enough slots are available. However, if it exceeds the tonnage limit, forget about being allowed on the battlefield at all by the command.
Fortunately, the default equipment can be modified at will, from giving up extra ammunition to free up some slots and tonnage for other weapons, to adding tools such as probes to improve sensor range or heat sinks to improve heat dissipation.
Weapon and tool upgrades
Of course, you can hire scientists for research projects to improve weapons and tools based on components recovered from each mission. Landing gear in combat also earns PD, which can be spent to improve trunk angle and speed, acceleration, top speed and more.
As if that weren’t enough, pilots also earn PD to upgrade their skill level, which can further influence equipment choices. The game also features a marketplace where new weapons, BattleMechs and tools can be purchased depending on the situation.
Summary
Visually, MechWarrior 5 Clans is a step up from Mercenaries. Environments offer more natural atmospheres and dense foliage, and BattleMech models are highly detailed.
Clan Smoke Jaguar’s faces and facial expressions occasionally cross the valley of awesomeness, but otherwise facial animation is decent. Performance is prone to the odd stutter here and there, but for the most part it was pretty smooth after lowering a few settings.
