Two and a half years after his sensational announcement, No Mans Sky Download is finally here. The title of SF, skilfully combining exploration, combat, craft and survival – on foot as in spaceship – thus unveils recently its surprises. As a reminder, his solo quest offers you to discover what lies at the heart of the galaxy, immensities generated procedurally. A goal that you can see as secondary or main, depending on your attraction for exploration, but that will surely take care of a good bunch of hours … The question that arises today is whether No Man’s Sky is faithful to his promises and whether or not it’s worth being played for what he really is.
Released on PC on August 12, 2016, No Man’s Sky has offered a range of options more significant, but also a system compatibility at first sight calamitous. The game was pre-ordered in mass by the players, they have not hesitated to shoot the title from the first hour of its virtual shelf as optimization was missing here at the call. Very reactive, the team of Hello Games has set to work to provide in the night of the launch various patches fixes to help the adventurers can not launch the soft, while hackers from all walks of life have been busy detect what pumped so many resources to provide the most modest bikes a few tweaks. By applying these various tricks (until a patch comes to integrate them without having to triturate the files of the game), the title finally arrives at the stability and the long-awaited optimization by the PCistes, who could not no more waiting to finally be able to touch, keyboard and mouse, the long-awaited space exploration game. So what is the PC version of No Man’s Sky, that’s what we’ll see …
The title of Hello Games mixes a lot of different aspects and inspirations. If its concept irretrievably thinks of the excellent Out There and the Elite Dangerous space exploration games, its graphic envelope oscillates between Destiny (for the interface) and the SF news of the first half of the 20th century. , not to mention Spore for zany creatures. The Atlas, the central element of the title that proudly sits on the jacket of the game, is also clearly inspired by Oblivion Teth. Nothing disturbing in short but it feels more like having a patchwork piece than a totally new world. However, we must give back to Caesar what is Caesar and admit that a lot of work has been done on the overall atmosphere of the game, which immediately establishes an atypical and pleasant atmosphere, which perfectly accompanies the procedural architecture of No Man’s Sky.
This aspect, crucial for the generation of the game area, offers each player an explorable galaxy with 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets with relatively varied biomes. This vertiginous concept puts us a little slap with brilliance to each new system discovery. The fauna and flora vary from one star to another and we will enjoy exploring, discovering, renaming and sharing our discoveries with the rest of the players. The excitement with each new entry into the atmosphere is often palpable at first, and you will find your mark quickly enough on the surface starting from the brief analysis of the conditions of life on the star. Is it toxic? Ice ? Ardent? Are fauna and flora present and, if so, in what quantity? What about resources? These are the questions you will ask yourself when setting foot on a new area. However, there will be a lack of variety even within a planet: exploring a small area is like exploring the entire planet in terms of topography and variation of scenery or atmosphere.
However, the different stars always have something to offer in terms of exploration and are usually populated with points of interest: monoliths that allow you to learn new words to understand the alien languages and trade with the NPCs of the stations, search centers to infiltrate to recover plans, crushed vessels that can be taken instead of your space cabin … Clearly, we can easily get caught up in the game and wander several tens of minutes on some planets, even after have played several dozen hours. Biomes and topography will also make your day full of sights, especially in caves filled with glistening crystals and extra-terrestrial mushrooms, often offering a true postcard that only lush planets with tall grass and abundant trees can match. Only here, as effective as it is, No Man’s Sky is still far from his trailers full of promise …
Among the big disappointments, wildlife has a fairly important place (at least when testing version 1.03). The latter has an erratic behavior of the most disappointing, especially when comparing its implementation to what we could see in the trailers of the game Forget this impression of coherent ecosystem, food chain almost palpable with its Predators and herds of herbivores fleeing danger: The animals in No Man’s Sky roam without a real purpose, and do not serve much purpose. At most, they can be fed with resources and dig up for you other minerals that you do not necessarily need. It’s nice for 5 minutes but, very quickly, we come to wonder if this part of the immersion would not have deserved a few months of development. However, let’s not throw the stone at Hello Games, this small team of twenty developers who managed to bring down a daunting work. Recall also that many free updates are already provided on the title. In 15 days, developers have already switched from a Gold version to the features limited to a much more pleasant and complete version, let us hope that their performance does not decrease after the release of the title.
We can be frustrated by the lack of activity on the stars, even if the storms, the day / night cycle and the weather will slightly change the atmosphere or will endanger the survival systems of the player: we would have liked more life on the surface as in space. Indeed, once the atmosphere crossed (without loadings), we find ourselves in space, free to go to other planets or stations thanks to different modes of propulsion, upgradable thereafter. Cargo ships are coming out of hyper-space before your eyes, pirates attacking them generating mini-quests of space protection. In short, an artificial life is quickly put in place according to scripts of appearance and activity generated around the solo player. We are a bit far from the involvement mirrored by the trailers, once again, but the whole thing stands and motivates the adventurer to explore, haggle, fight and craft to get closer to the grail.
